These medicines act on pathways that control skeletal muscle activity. They may be prescribed when a sudden back spasm or another painful tightening limits movement. They do not repair a torn muscle or remove the cause of every cramp. Some can make you sleepy, dizzy, or less alert, which may affect driving and balance. Alcohol and other medicines that cause drowsiness can increase these effects.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not share it with another person. Check before combining it with sleeping tablets, sedating allergy medicines, opioid pain medicine, or alcohol. Gentle movement, heat when suitable, hydration, and a rehabilitation plan may address the problem alongside medicine. Do not stop a regularly used medicine suddenly without checking with the prescriber, because some medicines need a planned reduction.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, severe confusion, facial swelling, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Arrange prompt assessment for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, fever with severe back pain, or pain after major injury. Contact the prescriber if sleepiness is marked, symptoms are worsening, or the medicine is not helping.

Ask which muscle problem the medicine is targeting, how long to use it, what activities to avoid, and whether your kidney, liver, pregnancy, or breastfeeding history changes the choice. Ask how to handle a missed dose and which side effects warrant a call.
