What should you know about sjogrens rash?

Sjogren's syndrome commonly causes dryness, but a new rash is not automatically caused by Sjogren's. A condition such as atopic dermatitis presents with itchy, inflamed skin; contact dermatitis follows exposure to an irritant or allergen; and drug rash can begin after a medicine is started or changed. Heat rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm and scabies have different patterns and treatments.

Note where the rash appears, whether it itches or burns, what it looks like, when it began and whether sunlight, heat, a product or a medicine preceded it. Photos taken during a flare can help a clinician compare changes.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, gentle cleanser and broad protective clothing outdoors. Avoid new cosmetics and fragranced products until the cause is clearer. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without contacting the prescriber, but report any rash that began after a medication change. A clinician may examine the skin and review medicines, dryness symptoms and possible infection before recommending treatment.

Arrange medical review for a rash that persists, recurs, spreads or comes with joint pain, fever, unusual fatigue, mouth sores or marked sun sensitivity. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, purple spots, eye pain or sores involving the mouth or genitals.

Ask whether the appearance fits a Sjogren's-related skin problem, a medicine reaction or another diagnosis. Discuss which products are safe for dry skin, whether testing is needed, and which symptoms should trigger same-day review.
