Sitz bath for a Bartholin cyst: what to know

A sitz bath means sitting in clean, comfortably warm water so the vulval area is covered. Warmth can relax nearby tissue, soften drainage and make sitting or walking more comfortable. It may help a small cyst settle or drain naturally, but it cannot confirm what the lump is or remove a blocked gland.

A cyst that becomes infected may develop into an abscess, with worsening tenderness, swelling, redness, warmth or pus. Vulval pain can have several causes, so a new or changing lump deserves an examination if it does not improve.

Use a clean bath or sitz-bath basin and comfortably warm water. Sit for a short period, then gently pat the area dry; avoid scrubbing, scented products and very hot water. Wear loose, breathable underwear and do not squeeze, pierce or try to drain the cyst yourself.
