What should you know about sinus tract formation osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis is an infection involving bone. A sinus tract can develop when infection persists in deeper tissue and creates a route toward the skin. You may notice a small opening, recurrent drainage, tenderness, swelling or an unpleasant odour, although the skin opening can look modest compared with the deeper problem. The tract does not prove how extensive the infection is; examination and tests are needed.

Arrange prompt review with an orthopaedic or infectious-disease team. Do not squeeze, probe or pack the opening unless instructed. Keep the area covered with a clean dressing, wash your hands before and after changing it, and record changes in drainage, colour, smell, pain or fever. Treatment may involve samples, imaging, antibiotics and a procedure to remove unhealthy tissue; bone reconstruction such as Bone Grafting may be discussed when a defect remains.

Go to urgent care for fever with shaking, confusion, faintness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, new weakness, or a sudden increase in drainage. Also seek prompt help if the wound exposes hardware or bone, or if you cannot keep fluids down. Diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity can make deterioration harder to notice, so use a lower threshold for review.

Ask where the infection is located, whether a sample is needed before antibiotics, how treatment will be monitored, whether surgery is required, and how wound care should be handled at home.
