Sinus drainage sore throat: what should you know?

Sinus drainage can make your throat sore because mucus repeatedly coats and irritates the throat lining. You may notice throat clearing, a tickle, hoarseness, cough, or a worse sensation on waking. This pattern can occur with a cold or allergy and does not by itself identify one illness.

Allergic rhinitis often brings sneezing, an itchy nose, and clear drainage. A common cold may add congestion, tiredness, or a mild fever. Influenza and COVID-19 can cause sore throat alongside broader symptoms such as fever, aches, or marked fatigue. Acid reflux may cause irritation without much nasal mucus. Strep throat, tonsillitis, or glandular fever can need examination, particularly when swallowing is very painful or glands are swollen.

The appearance of mucus is not enough to distinguish viral illness from bacterial illness. A clinician considers the full pattern, examination findings, and how symptoms change.

Sip water or warm drinks, gargle with warm salt water if you can do so safely, and use saline nasal spray or rinse for nasal congestion. Avoid smoke and other irritants. Rest and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief, especially if you are pregnant, have kidney or stomach problems, or take regular medicines.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have noisy or difficult breathing, develop swelling in the mouth or neck, or become confused. Seek medical advice for dehydration, severe one-sided throat pain, a persistent high fever, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Testing may be appropriate if COVID-19, influenza, or strep throat is suspected.
