Heat stroke occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature. Treat confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, severe weakness, or unusual behaviour after heat exposure as an emergency. Do not drive an unwell or confused person yourself. Even if the person seems better after cooling, they need urgent assessment because internal effects may continue after the skin feels cooler. Fever and vomiting can also occur, but altered mental status is the key danger sign.

Ask how to prevent recurrence during work, exercise, or travel in hot weather, how to replace fluids safely, and whether medicines or medical conditions increase heat risk. Tell the clinician how long the exposure lasted, what cooling was attempted, and whether confusion, vomiting, or collapse occurred.
