What should you know about single injection hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in joint fluid. An injection places it into the affected joint, commonly when pain or stiffness has not settled with an initial care plan. The clinician first checks whether the symptoms fit a joint problem and whether infection, a fracture or another cause needs different care. One injection does not repair every source of pain, and improvement varies between people.

Tell the clinician about allergies, skin problems near the injection site, medicines that affect bleeding, and any fever or current infection. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the joint. Afterward, follow the activity advice given to you; gentle movement may be encouraged while strenuous loading can be limited briefly. Keep the site clean and observe how pain and swelling change.

Contact the treating service promptly if redness, warmth, swelling or pain is increasing rather than settling, or if fluid leaks from the site. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, severe illness, or a rapidly worsening joint. These signs can indicate a significant reaction or infection and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Ask which joint problem the injection is intended to address, when normal activities may resume, what symptoms should be expected afterward, and what alternative treatments are available if relief is limited.
