Short answer

Simian malaria is a mosquito-borne malaria infection linked to parasites found in non-human primates and needs prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What simian malaria involves

The infection is passed by an infected mosquito, not by ordinary contact with another person. It can occur after travel or residence in forested areas where primates and mosquitoes are present. Fever, chills, headache, sweating, and muscle aches may develop, but symptoms can vary and may initially resemble another illness. A blood test is needed to identify malaria parasites and guide treatment; tell the clinician about travel, outdoor activity, and the date symptoms began.

What to do after possible exposure

Seek medical advice promptly if fever or flu-like illness follows travel in a malaria-risk area, even if you used mosquito precautions. Ask for malaria testing and explain any medicines taken before the visit. Do not rely on leftover treatment or wait for symptoms to follow a predictable pattern. For future journeys, a travel health consultation can review mosquito avoidance and whether malaria prophylaxis is suitable for the destination.

When to seek urgent care

Go to emergency care for confusion, extreme weakness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, seizures, fainting, yellowing of the skin, or inability to drink. Fever with chills after relevant travel warrants same-day medical advice because malaria can worsen quickly. Symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle aches do not identify the parasite on their own; testing is essential.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tests are needed, whether repeat testing is required, what treatment warning signs to watch for, and how to prevent mosquito bites on future travel.
