Silver sulfadiazine for cellulitis: what to know

Cellulitis can cause a tender, warm, red, swollen area that expands through the skin. A break in the skin, an ulcer, or conditions such as athlete's foot can provide an entry point for bacteria. A cream placed on the surface may not reach the deeper tissues involved in cellulitis. Silver sulfadiazine is generally associated with burn care and should not be used to self-treat a spreading infection.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if cellulitis is suspected. A clinician may examine the border of redness, check for an abscess or wound, and choose treatment based on the site and severity. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and do not share towels. Resting and elevating a swollen limb can be helpful while waiting for advice. Follow the prescribed treatment exactly and mark the edge of redness so change is easier to notice.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe skin pain, marked swelling, fever, confusion, faintness, or feeling very unwell. Infection near the eye, on the face, or around a joint needs prompt attention. Diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system can make skin infections harder to manage, so contact a clinician early. Worsening symptoms despite treatment may signal a complication such as sepsis.
