What should you know about silk suture for cervical cerclage?

A cervical cerclage, sometimes called a cervical stitch, reinforces the cervix when there is concern that it may shorten or open too early. Silk is one possible suture material; the choice depends on the obstetric team, the procedure and your circumstances. The stitch supports the cervix but does not treat every cause of early labour. Follow the discharge plan about activity, sex, medicines and appointments because restrictions differ between patients. Mild cramping, pressure or light spotting can occur after the procedure, but these symptoms should be discussed if they persist or worsen. Keep the maternity team informed about fluid leakage, contractions or changes in discharge. The stitch is usually removed before labour begins, unless your obstetrician gives a different plan. Do not attempt to remove or examine it yourself.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular tightening or contractions, vaginal bleeding, a gush or ongoing trickle of fluid, fever, severe pelvic pain, or foul-smelling discharge. These signs can indicate labour, infection or ruptured membranes and need assessment even if the stitch feels intact. Follow the emergency plan provided by your own obstetric team.
