Signs a membrane sweep is working

During a sweep, a clinician separates the membranes around the baby from the cervix. This can release mucus and prostaglandins, which may soften the cervix and encourage contractions. Mild cramps, pelvic pressure, a small amount of blood-streaked mucus, or a thicker discharge can happen afterwards. Some people notice no change even when the cervix is beginning to alter, so symptoms do not confirm whether labour will start.

Use a pad if you are spotting or leaking fluid so you can observe the colour and amount. Rest, drink fluids, and note when cramps or contractions begin and whether they settle with rest. Follow the instructions from your maternity team about monitoring movements and contacting them. Do not put anything into the vagina if your clinician has advised against it.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or persistent pain, reduced baby movements, fever, or fluid that is green, brown, smelly, or continuously leaking. Seek urgent help if you feel very unwell or have a strong urge to push. If you are unsure whether fluid is amniotic fluid or bleeding is more than expected, call for advice rather than waiting.

Ask how much cramping or spotting is expected, how to time contractions, which number to call outside clinic hours, and what plan applies if labour does not begin. You can also ask whether another sweep or another method of induction may be discussed.
