What the signs mean

The waters are the membranes containing the fluid around your baby. They can release as a gush or as a slow, repeated trickle, and the fluid may be difficult to distinguish from urine or discharge. Braxton Hicks tightenings may occur without the membranes breaking. A change in discharge alone does not confirm that the waters are about to break.

If you think fluid is leaking

Put on a sanitary pad, note the colour and smell, and contact your maternity unit for advice. Do not use a tampon or put anything into the vagina. Keep track of contractions and your baby’s movements. If the leak happens before your expected birth time, mention this clearly because preterm labour needs prompt assessment.

When to seek care

Call maternity care promptly for a gush or ongoing trickle, especially if the fluid is green, brown, bloody, or has an unpleasant smell. Seek urgent help for fever, severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, reduced baby movements, or regular painful contractions. Do not wait for contractions if you suspect your waters have broken.
