What the changes can mean

A sweep separates the membranes near the cervix and may encourage the cervix to soften or labour to begin. Mild cramping and spotting can happen after the examination, but they do not prove that labour will start. A thick, jelly-like discharge may be the mucus plug. Contractions that remain irregular may settle, while labour contractions usually grow stronger, longer, and closer together.
