Inflammation in the large bowel may lead to diarrhoea, urgency, blood or mucus in the stool, cramping and abdominal pain. Ongoing symptoms can disturb sleep and make work, travel or eating difficult. Joint aches, mouth ulcers, skin changes or eye irritation can occur alongside bowel activity, although not everyone experiences these effects.
