Side effects and complications of tonsillitis

Inflamed tonsils can make swallowing uncomfortable and may cause pain felt in the ears because the areas share nerve pathways. Swollen glands in the neck reflect immune activity. Viral tonsillitis often settles with supportive care, while bacterial infection such as strep throat may need clinical assessment. Rarely, infection beside a tonsil can cause one-sided swelling, a muffled voice, or difficulty opening the mouth.

Take frequent sips of fluid, choose soft foods, and rest. Warm drinks or cool foods may soothe the throat; avoid smoke and other irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable pain relief. Do not use leftover antibiotics. If a clinician prescribes antibiotic treatment, take it exactly as directed and report a rash, breathing difficulty, or severe diarrhoea.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly worsening swelling, a muffled voice, or inability to open your mouth. Arrange a GP consultation for persistent fever, dehydration, repeated episodes, severe one-sided throat pain, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Earache or swollen glands that continue also deserve assessment.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest viral tonsillitis or strep throat, whether testing is needed, and which pain relief is suitable. Confirm when to expect improvement and what changes should prompt reassessment.
