Side effects of strep

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat. People may develop a sudden [Sore Throat](/symptoms/sore-throat/), pain when swallowing, fever, swollen glands in the neck, headache or a fine rash. Children may also have nausea or reduced appetite.

A throat infection can spread locally and may contribute to [Tonsillitis](/conditions/tonsillitis/). More serious problems are uncommon but can involve breathing, swallowing, dehydration, or a wider response to infection. The symptoms alone cannot confirm whether strep is the cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Use only medicines that are suitable for the person's age, health and other treatments. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed and seek advice about side effects rather than stopping independently.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, neck swelling, or inability to drink. These signs can indicate an airway or deep-throat problem.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), dehydration, severe weakness, a spreading rash, or symptoms that return after improvement. A clinician can assess complications and whether another diagnosis is more likely.

Ask whether examination or a throat test is needed, how to manage swallowing pain, and what improvement to expect. If an antibiotic is offered, ask how to take it and which reactions should be reported.
