What should you know about side effect of tetanus?

A sore, warm or slightly swollen area around the injection site is a common short-term reaction. Some people feel tired, have a mild fever, headache or aching muscles as the immune system responds. These symptoms usually settle without specific treatment. The vaccine cannot give you tetanus. If symptoms are severe, unusual, or begin after a wound rather than after an injection, the cause may need separate assessment. Review the vaccination record with a clinician if you are unsure what you received.

Rest, drink fluids and move the arm gently. A cool, clean cloth over the injection site may ease discomfort. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain or fever medicine is suitable if you need one, particularly if you are pregnant, have allergies, or take regular medicines. Keep the wound clean if vaccination followed an injury, and follow the wound-care instructions you were given. Do not scratch or tightly cover the injection site.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, widespread hives, severe dizziness or collapse after vaccination. Seek medical advice for a high or persistent fever, rapidly increasing redness or swelling, severe weakness, or symptoms that are getting worse rather than easing. A deep, dirty or puncture wound also deserves prompt assessment because vaccination is only one part of tetanus prevention.
