Shoulder sunburn: what to know

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

Shoulder sunburn is an inflammatory skin injury after too much ultraviolet exposure; cool care, gentle moisturising, fluids, and avoiding further sun can support recovery, while blistering or severe symptoms need medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What shoulder sunburn means

Sunburn can cause skin redness, warmth, tenderness, tightness, and swelling on the exposed shoulders. The skin may later peel as injured surface cells shed. Blisters indicate a deeper injury and should be left intact rather than pierced. Even when redness settles, the area remains more vulnerable to additional ultraviolet exposure.

Repeated sun injury contributes to sun-damaged skin over time. The severity of a burn is not judged only by how red it looks, especially on deeper skin tones where colour change may be less obvious. Pain, heat, swelling, and blistering can help show that the skin needs careful protection.

How to care for it

Move out of direct sun, take a cool shower or apply a cool damp cloth, and avoid ice directly on the skin. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is damp; Emollient Therapy may be discussed if dryness is troublesome. Drink fluids and wear loose clothing that does not rub the shoulders.

Do not peel loose skin, burst blisters, or apply harsh exfoliants. Protect the area from further sunlight until it has healed, using clothing and shade. Do not apply topical corticosteroids without advice; a clinician can decide whether Topical Corticosteroids are appropriate for a particular inflammatory reaction.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, signs of infection such as increasing warmth or pus, or a burn involving the face, hands, or genitals. Urgent care is appropriate for confusion, faintness, repeated vomiting, severe headache, or difficulty keeping fluids down after sun exposure. A child, older adult, or person with significant medical conditions may need earlier guidance.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how deep the burn appears, how to dress any blistered areas, and which moisturiser or pain-relief approach is suitable for you. Mention medicines or conditions that increase sun sensitivity. If peeling, redness, or blisters continue to worsen rather than settle, ask whether the skin needs examination.

Questions people ask

Should I pop a sunburn blister?

No. Leaving it intact helps protect the injured skin; cover it gently and seek advice if it is extensive or worsening.

Why does sunburn peel on the shoulders?

Peeling is the skin shedding damaged surface cells during recovery, and picking can increase irritation or infection risk.
