Shoulder Subluxation Reduction: What to Know

A subluxation is a partial loss of contact between the ball and socket of the shoulder. It may slide back by itself, leaving a feeling of slipping, catching, pain, or insecurity. A complete dislocation stays out of position and requires urgent medical care. The same event can affect ligaments, bone, cartilage, nerves, or blood vessels, so a shoulder that appears to have returned to place still deserves evaluation.

Keep the arm supported in the most comfortable position and avoid trying to push or pull the joint into place. Remove rings or tight items if swelling is developing, and use a wrapped cold pack briefly if it helps. A clinician may check circulation, sensation, movement, and the need for imaging before or after reduction. Rehabilitation and physiotherapy can later address control, strength, and movement habits that support the shoulder.

Go to an emergency service if the shoulder remains out of place, pain is severe, or the arm is numb, weak, pale, blue, or cold. Urgent assessment is also needed after a significant fall or collision, even if the shoulder seems to have moved back. Do not drive yourself if arm control or sensation is impaired.
