Shoulder Reduction Technique

A shoulder reduction is a clinician-performed procedure that guides a dislocated joint back into position after checking for injury. It is not a manoeuvre to attempt at home, because forceful pulling can worsen a fracture, nerve injury, or blood-vessel problem.

The team examines the arm's position, circulation, sensation, and movement, and may use imaging to look for a fracture. They choose a controlled technique based on the direction of dislocation, muscle spasm, pain, and other injuries. Medication for comfort may be offered. After the joint is restored, the arm is examined again and imaging may confirm alignment.

Reduction restores position; it does not by itself repair stretched tissues or prevent another dislocation. Follow-up helps assess stability and plan recovery.

Follow instructions about a sling, activity, wound or skin checks, and prescribed medicines. Do not return to lifting, contact sport, or overhead loading until a clinician says it is appropriate. Rehabilitation can gradually restore movement, strength, and shoulder control; physiotherapy may be part of that plan.

A suspected dislocation needs urgent assessment, especially after a fall or sports injury. Seek immediate help for a visibly deformed shoulder, severe pain, inability to move the arm, numbness, worsening weakness, or a hand that is cold or changes colour. After reduction, return urgently if the shoulder appears displaced again or circulation and sensation change.

Ask whether there is a fracture or tendon injury, how long to use support, which movements are restricted, and when rehabilitation can begin. Ask what symptoms could suggest another dislocation.
