Shoulder pain massage points

Short answer
Gentle massage around tense shoulder muscles may ease temporary discomfort, but painful pressure cannot diagnose or treat the underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Using massage for shoulder pain
Gentle massage around tense shoulder muscles may ease temporary discomfort, but painful pressure cannot diagnose or treat the underlying cause. Work around the upper back, shoulder blade and side of the neck with light pressure rather than pressing directly on a painful joint or swollen area. Relief should not be used as proof that the problem is minor.
What massage can and cannot tell you
Muscle tension can accompany Shoulder Pain after prolonged sitting, guarding or repeated activity. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis, Shoulder Impingement and Frozen Shoulder involve deeper tissues whose symptoms may not improve with rubbing. Cervical Radiculopathy may cause burning, tingling or numbness, which massage should not aggravate. Sudden pain after injury, notable weakness or pain at rest needs assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
A cautious self-care approach
Use clean hands and a comfortable position. Start with broad, gentle strokes for a short period and check how the shoulder feels later. Avoid deep pressure over the front or top of the shoulder, the armpit, the spine, broken skin, bruising or a visibly swollen region. Stop for sharp pain, spreading symptoms, dizziness or skin changes. Pair comfort measures with gentle movement and seek physiotherapy advice if the problem keeps returning.
When not to massage
Do not massage a shoulder that is deformed, hot and increasingly swollen, or suddenly unusable after trauma; seek prompt medical care. Emergency help is appropriate for chest pain, breathing difficulty, faintness or sweating with shoulder discomfort. Arrange a routine assessment when pain persists, disrupts sleep or comes with weakness, numbness or restricted movement.
Questions about massage and recovery
Ask whether massage is suitable for your suspected problem, which areas are safe to touch, and which exercises can address the cause. Ask how to tell ordinary post-treatment tenderness from a symptom that needs review.

Questions people ask
Can massage remove a rotator cuff problem?
Massage may temporarily relax nearby muscles, but it does not establish or correct a tendon tear or other underlying shoulder condition.
Why does massage make my arm tingle?
Tingling may reflect nerve irritation or excessive pressure; stop and arrange an assessment, especially if numbness or weakness remains.
