Shoulder pain during a front raise
Shoulder pain during a front raise can reflect an irritated tendon, reduced shoulder movement, or an injury that needs assessment. Notice whether the pain starts as the arm rises, occurs near the top of the movement, or remains afterward. The timing, strength and range of motion help a clinician understand the problem.
What the movement can reveal
Lifting the arm forward loads the muscles and tendons at the front and top of the shoulder. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis and Shoulder Impingement can present with pain during this action. A Rotator Cuff Tear can present with weakness as well as pain, particularly after a fall or sudden force. Frozen Shoulder may limit several directions, including reaching forward. Neck-related nerve irritation can present with pain, tingling or numbness travelling into the arm. These patterns do not identify a diagnosis by themselves.
What to do now
Pause painful raises and avoid repeatedly testing the same arc. Keep the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range so it does not become stiffer. Cold or warmth may feel helpful; protect the skin and stop if either worsens symptoms. A physiotherapist can check movement, strength and technique, then select exercises that match the cause. Resume resistance gradually only when ordinary movements are comfortable.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits dressing or sleep, or follows an injury. Seek urgent care for a visibly deformed shoulder, sudden inability to lift the arm, severe swelling, or a cold, pale or numb hand. Chest discomfort, breathlessness, sweating or nausea with shoulder pain requires emergency help.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask: Which movement is provoking the pain? Is my strength reduced or is motion simply restricted? Which exercises are suitable now, and what should make me stop? Could the neck or another joint be contributing? What improvement should I expect before a follow-up?

Questions people ask
Should I keep doing front raises through pain?
No. Stop the exercise if it causes sharp or increasing pain, and use comfortable movement until the shoulder has been assessed or settles.
Does front-raise pain prove a rotator cuff tear?
No. Several shoulder and neck conditions can present with this symptom; weakness, injury history and examination are needed to clarify the cause.
