Short answer

A shoulder dislocation in a CrossFit athlete means the upper arm bone has moved out of its socket and needs prompt medical assessment, protection, and rehabilitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it can happen in training

Movements such as kipping, handstand work, jerks, snatches, muscle-ups, or a fall can place the arm in a vulnerable position while force travels through the shoulder. A dislocation may stretch or damage the capsule, labrum, muscles, nerves, or nearby bone. The shoulder may look out of place, feel locked, and cause severe pain, although appearance and pain vary. Once the joint has been reduced, the surrounding tissues still need time and structured loading. Repeated episodes can reflect shoulder instability, especially when the athlete returns to high-demand positions before control and strength have recovered.

What to do after the event

Stop training and support the arm in the position that feels safest. Do not attempt to pull, rotate, or push the shoulder back into place, and do not let a training partner try a technique. Medical staff can check circulation and nerve function, confirm the joint position, and assess for associated injury. Follow instructions about immobilisation, pain relief, and movement. Rehabilitation usually progresses from protected motion to strength, shoulder-blade control, and sport-specific drills. A return to kipping or overhead lifting should be based on function and confidence rather than a calendar alone.

When it is urgent

Treat a suspected dislocation as an urgent injury, particularly after a fall or forceful rep. Seek emergency care immediately if the shoulder is deformed, the arm cannot move, the hand is numb, or the hand becomes pale, blue, or cold. Severe swelling, an open wound, or worsening pain also requires urgent review. Even if the shoulder appears to go back in by itself, arrange medical assessment because a fracture, tissue injury, or instability may remain.

Questions for your clinician

Ask what structures were affected, how long protection is needed, which exercises are safe now, and what objective milestones should precede overhead lifting, kipping, or contact. Ask how to respond if the shoulder slips again and whether an instability assessment is appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can I reduce my own shoulder dislocation?

No. Manipulation can worsen a fracture or injure nerves and blood vessels; seek urgent medical care.

Can the shoulder dislocate again?

It can, particularly when instability remains or demanding positions are resumed before rehabilitation is complete.
