What should you know about shooting pain down legs?

A nerve emerging from the lower spine can become sensitive when surrounding joints, discs, or tissues narrow or become inflamed. Lumbar Spondylosis can be associated with back stiffness and pain that travels into the buttock or leg. Tingling, altered sensation, or weakness may follow the same route. Pain in both legs, symptoms that worsen with walking, or discomfort that changes with sitting and bending provides useful information, but does not establish a diagnosis by itself.

Keep changing position and take short, comfortable walks if movement does not worsen the pain. Avoid prolonged bed rest, heavy lifting, and repeated bending or twisting during a flare. Use a supportive position for rest and note which postures ease or aggravate symptoms. Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits normal activity, or is accompanied by sensory change; treatment depends on the examination and may include guided rehabilitation.

Seek emergency help for new difficulty controlling urine or stool, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe symptoms in both legs. Get prompt medical care after significant trauma, or for fever, unexplained weight change, or pain that is constant and severe. Do not drive yourself if weakness makes walking unsafe.

Ask which nerve and spinal movements should be checked and whether you need immediate testing. Describe the pain's route, changes in strength or sensation, bowel or bladder symptoms, recent injury, and positions that change it.
