The phrase is used most often for illness linked with transport stress and respiratory infection in animals. It is not a standard diagnosis for people. In a person, fever means the body temperature has risen and may occur with an infection, inflammation, heat exposure, or another problem. Cough, sore throat, breathlessness, rash, urinary symptoms, recent travel, and contact with illness help a clinician narrow the cause. Respiratory illnesses such as acute bronchitis, bronchiolitis, a common cold, COVID-19, croup, or chickenpox can have fever among their features. Brucellosis and cellulitis are other conditions a clinician may consider when the history or examination points that way.
