What should you know about shingles sore throat?

Shingles usually causes a localized painful rash, but symptoms around the face or mouth can affect eating and swallowing. A sore throat may instead occur with a common cold, influenza, COVID-19, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, tonsillitis, strep throat, or glandular fever. The rash pattern does not diagnose the throat problem. A clinician may need to look at the mouth and throat, check temperature and glands, and consider whether the symptoms began together or separately.

Seek medical advice if a sore throat accompanies a new shingles rash, especially when there are blisters in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, or reduced drinking. Sip fluids, choose soft foods, avoid smoking and irritating drinks, and rest your voice. Do not share cups, towels, or close face-to-face contact while you have an unexplained infectious illness. Follow prescribed treatment exactly and do not use leftover antibiotics.

Get urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have breathing difficulty, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, a muffled voice, severe dehydration, confusion, or a rash near the eye. Seek prompt assessment for severe one-sided throat pain, marked neck swelling, or mouth lesions that make drinking difficult. These warning signs can indicate an airway, throat, or eye problem requiring immediate care.

Ask whether the sore throat needs a throat examination or swab, whether mouth lesions could be related to the rash, and which pain relief is suitable. Mention cough, blocked nose, fever, swollen glands, reflux symptoms, and any trouble swallowing fluids.
