What should you know about shingles and itchy skin?

Shingles follows an irritated nerve and often causes abnormal sensation before or alongside a rash. Itching may be sharp, prickling or deep rather than limited to the surface. Many other conditions cause itchy skin, including eczema, contact reactions, psoriasis, scabies, hives and skin yeast infection. The location, timing, appearance and symptoms together guide diagnosis.

Avoid scratching, use a bland moisturiser if the skin is dry, and stop any newly introduced fragranced product. Photograph a changing rash for comparison and arrange medical advice if shingles is possible, because treatment decisions depend on timing and risk factors. Keep suspected blisters covered and avoid sharing towels until assessed.

Arrange prompt care for a one-sided itchy rash with burning, pain or blisters, particularly on the face or near an eye. Seek urgent help for eye symptoms, facial weakness, severe headache, fever with rapid spread or extensive blistering. New itch with swelling of the lips or breathing difficulty is an emergency.

Ask whether the rash follows a nerve pattern, what alternatives should be considered, whether testing or antiviral treatment is needed, how to protect contacts, and which soothing products will not irritate the area.
