Shin Splints While Running

Short answer
Shin splints while running usually reflect repeated impact that the lower leg has not yet adapted to, especially after a rapid training change.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- A sudden increase in running load
- First change
- Reduce painful impact
Why running can trigger them
Pain often develops along the inner shin after increasing distance, speed, hills, frequency, or harder surfaces. It may start after a run and become noticeable earlier as irritation builds. Flat Feet or a change in footwear can alter loading through the foot and shin. Shin Pain that is sharply localised, present at rest, or worsening with each run should not be assumed to be shin splints.
Adjust your running plan
Stop or shorten runs that cause rising pain, and use comfortable low-impact exercise instead. Review recent training, terrain, shoes, warm-up, and recovery. Resume with easy sessions on a forgiving surface when walking is comfortable, leaving rest between efforts and changing one training factor at a time. Physiotherapy can assess strength and mobility; Gait Retraining may improve stride loading. Custom Orthotics can be considered when foot mechanics are part of the picture.
Running symptoms that need care
Arrange an evaluation if pain persists after reducing running, repeatedly returns, or changes your stride. Seek prompt care for a precise tender spot, pain at rest or overnight, swelling, pain after a fall or direct impact, inability to bear weight, numbness, or rapidly increasing pain. A different injury may need specific protection and testing.
Questions to bring
Ask when you can restart running, what training limit is appropriate, and whether your shoes, foot mechanics, calf capacity, or stride should be assessed. Ask for clear symptoms that mean you should stop a session.

Questions people ask
Can I keep running with shin splints?
Running should be reduced or paused when pain rises; return gradually once everyday movement is comfortable.
Do hills make shin splints worse?
Hills can increase lower-leg demand, so reduce them while symptoms are active and rebuild gradually.
