Shin splints from weight lifting: what to know

How the structures involved in Shin Splints differ from normal

Short answer

Shin splints from weight lifting may come from repeated bracing, calf loading or impact around a new training pattern, so technique and load changes deserve attention.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common demands
Bracing, calf work, lunges, carries and impact
First adjustment
Remove the painful movement and lower training demand
Return priority
Foot control, ankle mobility and gradual loading

Why lifting can involve the shin

Squats, deadlifts, lunges and loaded carries require the lower leg to stabilise the foot and ankle. More sets, heavier resistance, deep knee travel, jumping between sets or a sudden return to training can increase that demand. Tight calves, limited ankle movement or feet that roll inward may change how force is shared. Shin splints tend to produce broader soreness along the shin; pain from a single impact or a very small tender spot needs a different assessment. Foot shape, including flat feet, is only one possible contributor.

Adjust the lifting session

Stop the exercise that reproduces pain and avoid testing it repeatedly under load. For a short period, reduce resistance, range, sets or impact, choosing movements that keep symptoms quiet. Keep the foot planted and the knee aligned as instructed by a qualified coach or therapist, without forcing a painful position. Restore calf and ankle capacity gradually before returning to loaded carries or jumps. Physiotherapy can assess strength, ankle mobility and lifting mechanics. Gait retraining or custom orthotics may be discussed when walking or foot control contributes to the strain.

When to seek care

Seek an assessment if pain persists after modifying training, appears during ordinary walking, or repeatedly returns with light loads. Prompt care is needed for a focal bony tender point, pain at rest or overnight, swelling, inability to bear weight, numbness, weakness or sudden severe pain. A clinician can check whether the problem is muscle-tissue overload, a bone stress injury or another source of shin pain.

Questions for your doctor

Which lifting movement is most likely stressing my shin, and what temporary substitute is suitable? Do I need a bone stress assessment? What strength or ankle-control goals should I meet before loading the exercise again?

Questions people ask

Can squats cause shin splints?

They can contribute when a new squat depth, volume, resistance or ankle demand overloads tissues around the shin, although other causes are possible.

Should I train through shin pain while lifting?

Do not push through pain that worsens, changes your technique or appears with walking; modify the session and arrange an assessment if it persists.
