Shin splints from treadmill: what to know

Short answer
Shin splints from treadmill use usually follow a mismatch between training load and tissue tolerance, and a gradual adjustment can reduce repeated stress.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why a treadmill session can hurt
A treadmill can make it easy to repeat the same stride for a long time. Increasing speed, incline or session length quickly may overload the muscles and connective tissues along the shin. A firm belt, worn shoes, limited ankle movement or feet that roll inward can influence how force travels up the leg. Flat feet may be relevant for some people, but shin pain does not identify one cause by itself. Note whether discomfort starts during exercise, after cooling down, or the next morning, and whether it is diffuse or pinpointed.
How to modify training
Pause running and incline work while ordinary walking remains painful. When symptoms settle, restart with an easier pace, a shorter session and no incline, then increase one variable gradually. Use shoes that feel supportive and are in good condition; avoid abruptly switching to minimalist footwear. Warm up with easy movement and stop if pain changes your stride. Cross-training that does not reproduce symptoms can maintain activity. Physiotherapy can assess calf capacity, ankle control and treadmill technique; gait retraining or custom orthotics may help when those findings support them.
When to seek care
Book a clinical review when symptoms persist after training changes, recur each time you resume, or become focused at one spot on the bone. Seek prompt care for inability to bear weight, substantial swelling, pain at rest or overnight, numbness, weakness, or sudden severe pain. A clinician may need to rule out a bone stress injury or another source of shin pain.
Questions for your doctor
Which treadmill setting or training change is most likely to be aggravating my symptoms? Is the tenderness diffuse or concentrated enough to check the bone? How should I progress back to running, and would physiotherapy or gait retraining help?

Questions people ask
Should I keep running on a treadmill with shin pain?
Avoid running when it changes your stride or makes walking painful; resume only with a gradual, easier programme once symptoms have settled.
Can incline walking irritate the shins?
Yes. An incline changes calf and ankle demands, so a sudden increase can add load even when the pace feels moderate.
