Shin splints during running: what to know

Short answer
Shin splints during running usually reflect overload of tissues along the shin after a change in training, surface, or footwear.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- A rapid change in running load
- Useful focus
- Pain pattern, footwear, surface, and recovery
What the pain may mean
The discomfort is often spread along the inner border of the shin rather than confined to one tiny spot. It may begin during a run, feel sore afterward, and become more noticeable when your weekly distance, speed, hills, or running frequency rises quickly. Hard surfaces and worn shoes can add load, while foot mechanics such as Flat Feet may influence how force travels through the lower leg. Shin pain has other possible causes, so location, tenderness, swelling, and the pattern with activity matter.
What you can do now
Pause running that brings on pain and use lower-impact movement only if it stays comfortable. Ice wrapped in a cloth can calm soreness for a short period. When walking is comfortable, return gradually with shorter, easier sessions and rest between them; do not increase speed and distance together. Check that your shoes fit well and still provide suitable support. A physiotherapist can review calf strength, ankle movement, training load, and running form. Gait Retraining or Custom Orthotics may be considered when an assessment identifies a useful target, and Physiotherapy can guide a graded return.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain is worsening, persists despite reducing running, changes your walking pattern, or is focused at one small bony area. Seek urgent care for marked swelling, inability to bear weight, numbness, unusual colour or temperature in the foot, or pain after a significant injury. A clinician may examine the shin and nearby joints and decide whether further testing is appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could this be shin splints or another source of Shin Pain? Which activities are suitable while it settles? What training change may have triggered it? Do my foot mechanics or shoes need review? When can I safely test a gradual return to running?

Questions people ask
Can I run through shin splint pain?
Continuing the activity that provokes pain can keep the area irritated; switch to comfortable lower-impact exercise and return gradually.
Is every shin pain case a shin splint?
No. A focused tender spot, pain at rest, swelling, or difficulty bearing weight needs clinical assessment.
