Shin Splint Area: Where Pain Is Felt

Short answer
The shin splint area is usually along the inner edge of the lower leg, where repeated loading can irritate muscles and their attachment to the shin bone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical area
- Inner border of the lower leg
- Common trigger
- A rapid increase in impact or training load
Understanding the location
People often describe a sore strip rather than one pinpoint spot, running along the inside of the shin from near the ankle upward. It may feel tender during or after running, brisk walking, jumping, or standing for long periods. A change in training, hard ground, limited ankle movement, or foot mechanics such as [Flat Feet](/conditions/flat-feet/) can increase strain. Shin splints are not confirmed by location alone: a single intense tender point, swelling, pain at rest, or pain that keeps worsening can indicate another problem.
Reducing strain
Temporarily reduce impact and build back gradually after daily movement is comfortable. Check that shoes are supportive and suited to your activity, and avoid sudden changes in distance or speed. A physiotherapist can assess strength, ankle mobility, and walking or running technique; [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) and [Gait Retraining](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/gait-retraining/) may be considered. [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) are sometimes discussed when foot mechanics contribute to repeated loading.
When the location needs assessment
Book an assessment if pain is focused over a small area, affects normal walking, returns quickly after rest, or continues during the night. Seek urgent help after significant injury, or for deformity, inability to bear weight, severe swelling, new numbness, weakness, or a pale or cold foot. General information about the symptom is available under [Shin Pain](/symptoms/shin-pain/).
Questions to take along
Is my pain pattern consistent with shin splints? Could foot posture or ankle stiffness be increasing load? What activity can I continue? Would an exercise plan, gait assessment, or orthotic review be useful? Which symptoms would suggest a stress injury?

Questions people ask
Are shin splints always on the inner shin?
They commonly affect the inner border, but pain elsewhere or pain in one precise spot should be assessed rather than assumed to be shin splints.
Can flat feet contribute to shin splint strain?
Foot mechanics can change how force travels through the leg, so an assessment may help identify whether they are contributing.
