Shin pain while resting: what to know

Short answer
Shin pain while resting can signal an irritated or injured structure that needs recovery, and persistent focal pain should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Record
- Timing, night symptoms, exact location, swelling, and skin changes
- Until assessed
- Avoid impact activity and repeated pressure on the sore area
What resting pain can suggest
Muscle overload may remain sore after activity, but pain that continues without movement can also occur when a tendon, joint, nerve, or bone is irritated. A recent increase in running, walking, jumping, or standing is useful context. Pain that is easy to pinpoint, tender over the bone, or present at night deserves a closer assessment. A stress fracture presents with localized pain and can persist beyond exercise; this symptom alone cannot confirm the condition.
Describe whether the pain is aching, burning, throbbing, or sharp. Note skin colour and temperature, swelling, numbness, weakness, fever, and whether changing leg position affects it.
What to do today
Stop the activity that increased the pain and avoid repeatedly pressing or testing the sore area. Rest in a comfortable position, elevate the leg if it feels swollen, and use a wrapped cool pack if that provides relief. Wear supportive footwear when walking and keep movement gentle. Do not return to impact exercise while resting pain is present.
Arrange an appointment if symptoms do not settle, recur at night, or interfere with sleep or ordinary walking. A clinician can decide whether an examination or imaging is appropriate.
Red flags
Seek prompt care for severe or rapidly increasing pain, inability to bear weight, significant swelling, numbness, weakness, a cold or pale foot, or a leg that looks deformed. Fever with redness or warmth also needs urgent evaluation. New chest symptoms or breathlessness require emergency help.
Questions to bring
Ask what could explain pain at rest, whether the exact tenderness suggests bone stress, what activity is safe, and what changes should trigger urgent review. Tell the clinician about recent exercise, injury, illness, and medicines.

Should I massage a painful shin?
Avoid deep massage over a sharply tender or swollen area until an injury has been assessed.
