Short answer

Shin pain when squatting down often reflects increased load through the lower leg, but persistent or focused pain needs assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Track
Squat depth, exact pain location, swelling, and walking tolerance
Avoid
Deep or loaded squats that reproduce sharp pain

What the pattern may mean

A deep squat bends the ankle and knee while the shin muscles help control the movement. Tight calf muscles, reduced ankle movement, a sudden increase in exercise, or a change in footwear can make that control uncomfortable. Pain spread along the inner or front border may fit an overuse pattern. Pain in one precise spot, tenderness when pressing the bone, swelling, or discomfort that continues after the squat deserves more attention. A stress fracture presents with localized pain and may worsen as loading continues; it is a condition to assess, not a conclusion to make from this symptom alone.

Note whether the pain starts on the way down, at the lowest position, or while standing up. Also record one or both shins, recent activity changes, and whether walking is affected.

What you can do now

Pause deep squats and painful jumping or running for now. Keep gentle, comfortable movement rather than testing the painful range repeatedly. Ice wrapped in a cloth may soothe the area after activity. Supportive shoes and a gradual return to exercise can reduce repeated loading. Do not push through sharp, localized pain or use pain relief to mask symptoms while continuing the same trigger.

If symptoms settle, resume with a smaller squat depth, slower control, and a pain-free range. A physiotherapist can check ankle mobility, calf strength, hip control, and technique.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical assessment if pain is worsening, keeps returning, limits walking, or remains focused in one bony area. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, inability to bear weight, numbness, unusual coolness, or a visibly deformed leg. Pain at rest or at night after a training increase also warrants assessment.

Useful questions to ask

Ask what structure seems painful, whether your examination suggests an overuse injury or bone stress, which activities are safe, and when to restart squatting. Bring a brief record of triggers and changes in activity.

Questions people ask

Can tight calves cause shin pain in a squat?

Limited calf flexibility can increase the work required at the shin and ankle, although other causes are possible.

Should I keep squatting through mild pain?

Reduce depth or stop if pain is sharp, localized, worsening, or still present after the activity.
