Shin Bone Splints: Symptoms and Care

Short answer
Shin bone splints cause exercise-related tenderness along the shin and improve when loading is reduced and the underlying movement pattern is addressed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Tenderness along the inner shin linked with impact activity.
- Helpful focus
- Reduce load, then rebuild strength and running tolerance gradually.
What shin splints are
Shin splints, also called medial tibial stress syndrome, describe pain and tenderness along the inner border of the shin after repeated impact. A rapid training increase, hills, hard surfaces, or poor recovery can overload the tissues attached to the tibia. Flat feet or a foot that rolls inward may alter how force travels up the leg. Pain in one small spot, pain at rest, or marked swelling is less typical and should raise concern for another injury.
How to settle symptoms
Reduce running, jumping, and hill work while the area is sore. Use comfortable shoes and choose cycling, swimming, or other movement only if it remains pain-free. Gradual calf and lower-limb strengthening can rebuild tolerance. A physiotherapist may assess stride and offer gait retraining; custom orthotics are considered when foot mechanics contribute. Return to impact in stages, increasing only one training demand at a time and stopping if pain escalates.
When an assessment is needed
Arrange care if symptoms do not settle with reduced impact, repeatedly return, or interfere with walking. Prompt assessment is particularly useful for focal bone tenderness, night pain, swelling, or pain that begins earlier in every session. Seek urgent help if you cannot bear weight, the leg is deformed, or the foot becomes numb, pale, or cold.
Useful questions
Ask whether your symptoms fit shin splints or a bone stress injury, whether your footwear or foot mechanics matter, and which exercises are appropriate now. Ask for clear signs that indicate a safe return to running.

Questions people ask
Are shin splints the same as a stress fracture?
No. They are different problems, although ongoing impact can make diagnosis harder and may worsen a bone stress injury.
Can orthotics help shin splints?
They may help some people when foot mechanics add load, but assessment should guide whether they are suitable.
