What should you know about shaving rash under armpit?

Underarm skin is folded, warm, and exposed to rubbing from clothing. Shaving can create tiny surface injuries, and deodorant applied soon afterward may sting or trigger Contact Dermatitis. Moisture and friction can contribute to Intertrigo, while tender bumps centred on hairs may be Folliculitis. One-sided, spreading, scaly, or repeatedly recurring changes should not automatically be blamed on the razor.

Stop shaving and deodorant while the skin is sore, unless a clinician has advised otherwise. Rinse with lukewarm water, use a gentle cleanser, pat dry carefully, and wear loose clothing. Avoid fragranced products, scrubs, alcohol-based solutions, and squeezing bumps. Once healed, use shaving gel, a clean razor, light strokes, and fewer passes. Leave time between shaving and applying a new underarm product so a reaction is easier to identify.

Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing pain, spreading warmth or redness, marked swelling, or pus. Arrange a clinical assessment if the rash does not improve after stopping shaving, returns with each shave, develops a strong odour or skin breakdown, or extends beyond the fold. Possible alternatives include Intertrigo, Contact Dermatitis, or Heat Rash.

Ask whether the rash is irritation, follicle inflammation, or a reaction to deodorant; whether any product should be avoided; and how to prevent recurrence. Tell the clinician whether both armpits are affected and whether there are lumps, drainage, itch, or pain.
