What should you know about shaving rash relief?

A razor can irritate the outer skin and inflame hair follicles, particularly after dry shaving, repeated strokes or use of a dull blade. Fragrance can add Contact Dermatitis. Itch, scale or a rash that continues without further shaving may suggest Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis or Ringworm instead. Relief can ease symptoms, but it does not establish the cause.

Stop shaving the area and rinse gently with lukewarm water. Pat dry, apply a cool clean compress and avoid scratching, scrubbing, tight clothing and fragranced products. Do not squeeze bumps. Once the skin is calm, soften hair first, use plain shaving gel, shave with hair growth and make fewer passes. Heat Rash and Intertrigo can worsen discomfort where sweat and rubbing are present.

Arrange an appointment if the rash is not settling after shaving stops, keeps returning, or has pain, warmth, pus, crusting or spreading redness. Seek prompt care for fever, severe pain, fast swelling, extensive blistering or a rapidly worsening rash. A widespread eruption after a new medicine should be reviewed because Drug Rash may require a different approach.
