What should you know about shaving rash pubic area?

Pubic hair is often coarse and the surrounding skin is sensitive, so a close shave can cause friction and hairs that curve back into the skin. Red bumps, burning and itch may follow. Contact Dermatitis can develop after a new shaving gel, soap or fragrance. Moisture and skin-to-skin rubbing can add to irritation; Intertrigo is one possible explanation in a fold. Scaly patches or marked itch may instead fit Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Ringworm or Scabies.

Pause shaving and avoid waxing, picking, squeezing and perfumed products until the skin recovers. Rinse external skin with lukewarm water, pat dry and wear loose, breathable underwear. A cool compress can reduce discomfort. Keep razors clean and personal. When you resume, soften hair first, use a plain shaving product, make light strokes with the grain and avoid repeated passes. Do not put products inside the vagina or on other internal surfaces.

Seek medical advice for spreading redness, worsening pain, warmth, swelling, pus, sores, blisters, unusual discharge or a rash that does not improve after shaving stops. Prompt care is needed for fever, severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling or difficulty passing urine. A clinician can distinguish shaving irritation from infection or dermatitis. A widespread rash after a new medicine should also be reviewed as Drug Rash may need different care.
