What should you know about shaving rash on head?

A close shave can remove the skin's protective surface oils and create tiny areas of friction. Redness, stinging, itch and small bumps may follow, especially when a blunt blade, repeated passes, dry shaving or fragranced products are involved. An inflamed follicle may produce a tender spot or a little pus. Scaly patches, ring-shaped areas or a rash that extends beyond shaved skin may point toward another cause, such as Contact Dermatitis, Psoriasis or Ringworm. A scalp rash is not diagnosed by appearance alone.

Pause shaving until the skin has settled. Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid scratching, alcohol-based aftershave, heavy fragrance and tight headwear. A cool, clean compress can ease heat and stinging. Do not squeeze bumps or share razors, towels or hats. When shaving again, use a clean sharp tool, soften the hair first, shave in the direction of growth with light strokes, and rinse the blade between passes. If bumps recur, a clinician can help distinguish razor irritation from follicle inflammation or a condition such as Atopic Dermatitis.

Arrange medical advice if redness is spreading, pain is increasing, pus or crusting is developing, or the rash is not improving after you stop shaving. Seek prompt care for fever, marked swelling, severe tenderness, a rapidly worsening rash, or areas of hair loss. A clinician may examine the follicles and scalp and decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed. A rash after a new medicine needs assessment because Drug Rash can require a different response.
