Shaving rash in the bikini area: what to know

The bikini area combines hair follicles, moisture, heat, and rubbing from underwear or clothing. Shaving can disturb the outer skin and leave stubble that feels prickly as it grows back. A rash limited to the shaved skin may be irritation; a rash extending into folds may be worsened by sweat and friction. Contact Dermatitis can follow a new shaving gel, fragrance, sanitary product, or laundry product. Ringworm, Intertrigo, Scabies, Psoriasis, or Atopic Dermatitis can also cause itching or redness and may need different care.

Leave the area unshaved until the skin settles. Rinse gently, pat dry rather than rubbing, and use loose breathable clothing to reduce heat and friction. Stop new or fragranced products, deodorising sprays, and alcohol-based aftershaves. Do not scratch, exfoliate, or apply strong medication to internal genital surfaces. For future shaving, soften hair with warm water, use a clean razor and suitable fragrance-free gel, follow hair growth, and avoid repeated strokes. If symptoms recur despite changing technique, an examination can distinguish simple irritation from an inflammatory, infectious, or allergic rash.

Arrange care if the rash spreads beyond the shaved area, becomes painful, develops blisters, sores, pus, marked scaling, or does not settle after the trigger is removed. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty.
