Short answer

Sharp pain in the wrist below the thumb often involves irritated thumb tendons, but an injury or joint problem also needs consideration when symptoms began suddenly.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean

Pain on the thumb side that worsens when pinching, lifting a child, opening a jar, or moving the thumb can fit De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, in which the tendons passing along that side become irritated. Pain after a fall onto the hand may instead reflect a sprain or a bone injury, even if the wrist can still move. Clicking, persistent swelling, reduced grip, or numbness changes the assessment. The exact spot, onset, and provoking actions are more useful than pain intensity alone.

What to do

Rest from forceful pinching, repetitive scrolling, and lifting with the thumb spread wide. Keep the wrist and thumb gently mobile if movement is comfortable, without repeatedly testing the sharp pain. A supportive thumb-and-wrist splint can reduce aggravating motion; it should not cause tingling, colour change, or pressure pain. Cold wrapped in cloth may help after activity. If symptoms followed a fall, or do not settle with activity changes, arrange an examination so tendon irritation is not confused with a fracture or significant sprain.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care after a fall or blow if there is marked swelling, bruising, deformity, inability to grip, or pain directly over a wrist bone. Urgent help is appropriate for a cold or blue hand, new numbness, rapidly worsening pain, or an open wound. Book a clinician review when pain lasts, recurs, or limits work, sleep, or childcare despite reducing the trigger.

Questions for your doctor

Do the symptoms fit tendon irritation or an injury? Would a thumb splint help, and how should it fit? Which movements and exercises can I safely resume?

Questions people ask

Why does gripping make this wrist pain sharper?

Gripping loads the thumb tendons and the wrist structures beneath them, so irritated tissue may hurt when the thumb stabilises an object.

Should I wear a splint?

A suitable thumb-and-wrist splint may limit aggravating movement, but persistent symptoms or injury-related pain should be assessed.
