Short answer

Sharp groin pain can arise from a strained adductor muscle, irritated hip joint, or another nearby problem, especially after a sudden movement or sport.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Avoid
Pause sprinting, cutting, and painful deep stretching after a sharp flare.
Describe
Tell the clinician about hip movement, trauma, bulges, fever, or urinary symptoms.

What may be behind it

Pain after sprinting, changing direction, or stretching may fit an adductor or other soft-tissue strain. Deep groin pain with hip flexion, sitting, or turning can occur with Hip Impingement or a Hip Labral Tear. Stiffness and activity-related aching may occur with Hip Osteoarthritis. Pain can also come from the lower abdomen, hernia, urinary system, or reproductive organs, so location alone cannot establish a hip diagnosis. Tell the clinician about the movement that started it and any swelling or bulge.

What to do at home

Stop sprinting, cutting, and deep stretches that reproduce sharp pain. Walk only as comfortably as possible, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth after a recent sports injury, and avoid forceful massage over a swollen area. Do not return to sport until walking and basic hip movement are comfortable. Sports Physiotherapy can help assess loading, restore movement, and plan a gradual return when appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe groin pain with inability to bear weight, a painful groin bulge that will not go back in, sudden testicular pain, pregnancy-related concerns, fainting, or fever with marked illness. Prompt assessment is needed after significant trauma, or when the hip becomes hot, swollen, or difficult to move. Arrange routine review for pain that persists or repeatedly returns.

What to ask

Ask whether the pain appears to come from the adductors, hip joint, abdominal wall, or another area. Ask which exercises and weight-bearing activities are suitable, whether imaging is indicated, and what return-to-sport signs you should meet.

Questions people ask

When is groin pain an emergency?

Urgent assessment is needed for inability to bear weight, a trapped painful bulge, sudden testicular pain, or severe illness with fever.
