What should you know about shapewear after lipo?

The garment should feel snug and supportive, but it should not cause sharp pain, numbness, skin discoloration, breathing difficulty, or coldness in a hand, foot, or other limb.

Liposuction temporarily irritates tissues and creates spaces beneath the skin where fluid can collect. Compression can help control swelling and give healing tissues gentle support while the treated area settles. It may also reduce rubbing from clothing and help you feel more secure when moving.

Your surgeon may choose a particular garment, pressure level, opening, or schedule according to the body area treated and the condition of your skin. A garment used too early, worn incorrectly, or made too tight can irritate incisions and restrict circulation. Shapewear bought for everyday body contouring is not automatically suitable for recovery.

Follow the written instructions from your surgical team about when to put the garment on, when it may be removed, and how long it should be used. Put it on smoothly, without rolling or bunching the fabric over an incision. Check the skin around openings and seams for rubbing, pressure marks, blistering, or increasing tenderness.

Keep dressings and incision areas exactly as instructed, and ask before applying creams beneath the garment. Wash the garment according to its care instructions so it stays clean and fully dry. Gentle walking may be encouraged, but avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or soaking wounds until your surgeon clears these activities. Do not alter the garment or add extra layers to increase compression.

Contact your surgical team promptly if swelling suddenly increases, one side becomes markedly more painful, the skin becomes increasingly red or hot, or an incision opens or produces concerning drainage. Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, sudden severe weakness, or a painful swollen limb. Remove or loosen the garment only as your clinical team advises, unless it is clearly causing an emergency problem such as restricted breathing or circulation.

Mild tightness, bruising, drainage, and uneven swelling can occur during early healing, but your own discharge instructions take priority. A follow-up visit lets the team check incisions, swelling, skin sensation, and whether the garment still fits appropriately.

Ask which garment and pressure level are intended for each treated area, whether it should be worn over dressings, and how to wash it without delaying care. Clarify what to do if the garment feels too tight, becomes wet, irritates an incision, or leaves persistent marks. Ask when you may return to exercise, sleep in your usual position, and change to less supportive clothing.
