What should you know about severe tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor is a superficial yeast-related skin condition. It can produce multiple lighter, darker or pinkish patches with fine scale, often on the chest, back, shoulders, neck or upper arms. Mild itch may occur, especially with heat and sweating. The condition is not a sign of poor hygiene and is not usually spread by ordinary contact. The scale can improve before the skin returns to its usual colour, so visible uneven tone does not by itself show that treatment has failed.

A clinician may recommend a topical antifungal cream, lotion or wash for affected skin. A medicated shampoo treatment can be used on the body when instructed, with attention to contact time and rinsing. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when the area is extensive, recurrent or difficult to treat topically; it requires a medication and health-history review. Keep skin cool and dry, avoid picking or scrubbing patches, and use sun protection because tanning can make colour contrast more noticeable. Recurrence is common enough that a clinician may discuss preventive treatment.

Arrange a review if patches are spreading, painful, markedly inflamed, oozing or associated with significant itch. Seek reassessment if the appearance is unusual, treatment causes a strong reaction, or there is no expected improvement after the instructed course. New white or dark patches should be checked when the diagnosis is uncertain because several skin conditions can resemble tinea versicolor.

Ask which antifungal format fits the extent of your patches, how long to leave a medicated wash on, and whether oral treatment is appropriate with your medicines. Ask when colour should even out and whether prevention is useful in your climate or pattern of recurrence.
