Severe Sunburn on the Face: What to Know

Facial sunburn may produce hot, tight, tender skin with marked redness and swelling. The nose, cheeks, forehead, lips and eyelids can react differently because the skin is exposed and delicate. Blisters, peeling skin and sensitivity to products may follow. Swelling around the eyes can make opening them difficult; pain inside the eye, light sensitivity or altered vision is not typical surface irritation and needs prompt review. Repeated ultraviolet injury contributes to sun-damaged skin.

Cool the face with a clean damp cloth and stop sun exposure. Rinse the eyes with clean water if needed, but do not rub them. Apply a simple fragrance-free moisturiser to intact skin; keep products away from the eyes and broken skin. Avoid exfoliants, retinoids, makeup, hot water and picking at peeling areas. A clinician can advise whether emollient therapy or topical corticosteroids is appropriate for the location and severity.

Seek urgent medical assessment for eye pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, severe eyelid swelling, facial blisters, pus, spreading warmth or fever. Emergency help is needed for fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing or inability to drink. Children and people with extensive facial burns should be assessed promptly, even if the skin looks only moderately red.
