Severe Runny Nose: What to Know

Clear discharge with sneezing, itchy eyes, or symptoms around dust, pets, or pollen can fit allergic rhinitis or another allergy. A cold, influenza, or COVID-19 may cause a runny nose with sore throat, cough, fever, tiredness, or body aches. Thick mucus, facial pressure, reduced smell, or symptoms that worsen after initial improvement can occur with sinusitis. Irritants such as smoke, strong scents, dry air, or some nasal products may also trigger ongoing drainage.

Drink fluids, rest, and use saline nasal drops or a rinse with safe water according to the product instructions. Wash hands and consider limiting close contact when infection is possible. Avoid smoke and other known irritants. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antihistamine or nasal spray based on your age, pregnancy status, blood pressure, and other medicines. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays longer than the label advises, because overuse can worsen blockage.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, confusion, or marked drowsiness. Arrange prompt assessment for a one-sided watery or bloody discharge after a head injury, severe facial pain or swelling, eye swelling, a persistent high fever, dehydration, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Seek routine advice when the runny nose keeps disturbing sleep or daily activities.
