Short answer

Severe razor burn usually reflects irritated skin after shaving, but persistent bumps, pus, spreading redness, or pain can signal another condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Stop shaving and reduce friction until the skin has settled.
Clue
Pus, spreading redness, or fever is less typical of simple irritation.

What may be happening

Razor burn is a short-term irritation caused by friction, pressure, repeated strokes, a blunt blade, or products that do not suit your skin. It often causes stinging, redness, warmth, and a rough or tender surface soon after shaving. Ingrown hairs occur when a cut hair curls back into the skin and may create local bumps or pus. Inflamed hair follicles can resemble razor burn, while keratosis pilaris produces persistent rough follicular bumps unrelated to one shaving episode. Razor bumps, also called pseudofolliculitis barbae, are especially associated with curved hairs that re-enter the skin after close shaving.

Steps that may calm it

Pause shaving and avoid picking, scrubbing, alcohol-based products, and fragranced creams on the irritated area. Rinse gently, pat dry, and use a bland moisturiser if it does not sting. Wear loose clothing where friction is a problem. Once the skin settles, use a clean sharp blade, shave in the direction of hair growth, avoid repeated passes, and consider an electric trimmer that leaves slight length. Recurrent bumps may need a different hair-removal plan. A clinician can advise whether [Folliculitis](/conditions/folliculitis/), [Razor Bumps](/conditions/pseudofolliculitis-barbae/), or [Ingrown Hairs](/symptoms/ingrown-hairs/) better explains the pattern.

When to seek care

Arrange a review if the reaction does not settle after stopping shaving, keeps returning, leaves dark marks or scars, or affects a large area. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe swelling, pus, fever, or pain that seems out of proportion. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening reaction after a product.

Questions for your doctor

Does this look like irritation, ingrown hairs, folliculitis, or razor bumps? Should I change my shaving method? Which product or treatment is suitable for my skin type? Could [Laser Hair Removal](/treatments/laser-and-energy/laser-hair-removal/) reduce repeated shaving problems, and what precautions apply?
