What should you know about severe laryngitis?

Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box. A common cold may trigger it, while acid reflux, voice strain, smoke or other irritants can also inflame the vocal cords. A hoarse voice, weak voice, throat discomfort and a dry cough are typical. The condition itself does not explain every prolonged voice change, so symptoms that persist or repeatedly return should be assessed.

Rest your voice by speaking briefly and gently; whispering can strain the voice as well. Drink fluids, use a humidified room and avoid smoking, vaping and dusty air. Do not share medicines or start antibiotics without advice, because many cases follow viral illness and antibiotics do not treat viruses. If reflux seems to worsen symptoms, discuss practical changes with a clinician rather than repeatedly clearing your throat.

Seek urgent care for noisy or difficult breathing, blue lips, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat swelling or severe weakness. Arrange a GP consultation for a voice change that does not improve, repeated episodes, significant pain, coughing blood or symptoms after an injury. Children with breathing difficulty need prompt assessment.
