Severe itch in the pubic area: what to know

Friction, sweat, shaving, tight clothing, scented washes, and laundry products can inflame delicate skin. Contact dermatitis often follows exposure to an irritating or allergenic product. A yeast infection may cause an itchy, red rash in warm skin folds. Scabies can cause intense itching, often worse at night, with small bumps or lines and itching in close contacts. Eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus, or hives can also affect the pubic region. Itch alone cannot identify the cause, and a rash may be hard to see in this area.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser if needed, then pat dry. Stop new intimate products, fragranced wipes, deodorants, and shaving until the skin settles. Choose loose, breathable underwear and change after sweating. Avoid scratching because broken skin can become infected; a cool compress can reduce the urge. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or insect treatments inside the genital area without advice, especially if pregnant or if sores are present. A clinician can inspect the rash and select treatment based on its cause.

Arrange a medical review if severe itch lasts, keeps returning, disturbs sleep, spreads, or does not improve after removing a suspected irritant. Seek prompt care for painful blisters or ulcers, pus, marked swelling, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or trouble passing urine. New genital symptoms after sexual contact may need assessment and testing; avoid sexual contact until you have guidance if sores or discharge are present.

Ask which skin changes point to irritation, yeast, eczema, scabies, or another diagnosis; whether testing is needed; which products and medicines are safe for the exact area; and how to prevent recurrence if a trigger or household exposure is found.
