Severe heartburn symptoms: what they may mean

Heartburn commonly produces burning behind the breastbone or in the upper abdomen. Severe episodes may bring sour liquid into the mouth, repeated burping, hoarseness, cough, throat discomfort, nausea, or pain that is worse after meals or when lying down. Acid reflux may cause this cluster, while gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or peptic ulcer disease can create similar upper-digestive symptoms. Move to an upright position and loosen clothing around the abdomen. Avoid lying flat, bending after eating, or having another large meal while symptoms are active.
